What Photographing Dogs and Horses Means To Me

I am often asked about my work, how I started (HERE), What I enjoy about what I do and why I do it.

Honestly, its really hard to put into words especially as I normally work visually.  But I put something together for another page and thought I would share it here.  Its the best I can do at explain how I feel about my work, why it is important to me and should be something that you should experience for yourself.

Dogs and Horses

If I’ve scruffled and made a fuss of some dogs in the morning, I’m set up for the day.  Dogs are amazing, they’re magical and have a beautiful inner soul.  I am often asked which have been my favourite dogs to work with and I can honestly say that the last dog I photographed was the best dog.  They are fascinating to me, I like to know what they are, I want to see their ears wiggle, I like the way they all have a different walk and aura.  There’s no better thing in this world to have as a best friend.  Photoshoots with dogs can be chaotic, fast paced, slow, challenging but always fun.  The spontaneity and personality traits are the things that get me excited when working with dogs on a photoshoot.  You’re never quite sure what they are going to give you and I love that challenge.

I find it much harder to put into words how I feel about working with horses.   I find them calming to be around, they put my busy mind to rest and I slow down and take more time with what I am doing.  There  is something almost spiritual about a horse and the relationship they have with their owners that is very different from a dog.  I always come away from photographing horses feeling like they have given me something back, its hard to explain.  They can be majestic, graceful, cheeky, full of character and personality, independent, stubborn and playful.  Someone once said that “horses make a landscape look more beautiful” and this is very true.  A well planned horse shoot is always so much more than that.
